Where do I find crawfish? Are different style of traps better in rivers and streams vs. lakes and ponds? Does it matter what bait is used? What bait is the most effective? Is this something I need a boat to do or can I do this from the shoreline? Can they be caught year round? When is the best time of the year to catch crawfish? Can I catch them during the day, or is an overnight soak better? How long do I let my traps soak before pulling them? What are the regulations for crawfishing? How big do the crawfish in my area get? What is the best way to cook and eat them? Are there recipes using crawfish meat? Am I able to freeze or store them for later use and if so, how can I do that?

Anyone can be a field researcher. Start by seeking answers to questions that you have about your local area regarding crawfish. Learn as much as you can using local resources like Fish and Game as well as local fishermen. Explore the answers for yourself to confirm validity. This is the funnest and most time consuming part of field research. I love testing information to find the truth, that in itself is exciting. Last but certainly not least is to share. Share what you have learned to help others! You can make a difference by assisting others trying out crawfishing for the first time. Making new friends and having positive social interaction helps to strengthening community.
